Best Insulation for Garden Rooms and Annexes

Insulation is arguably the most important factor in making a garden room comfortable year-round. Poor insulation means uncomfortable summers, freezing winters, and higher energy bills.

    Why Insulation Matters

    Good insulation provides:

    • Comfortable temperatures in all seasons
    • Reduced heating and cooling costs
    • Effective sound dampening
    • Prevention of condensation and moisture issues

    Types of Insulation

    PIR Insulation (Polyisocyanurate)

This is our preferred choice at LouMil. PIR boards offer:

    • Excellent thermal performance in thin profiles
    • Fire resistant properties
    • Moisture resistance
    • Long-lasting performance

    Rockwool / Mineral Wool

Good for acoustic insulation but requires thicker walls to achieve the same thermal values as PIR.

    Spray Foam

Creates an airtight seal but can be problematic if the building needs future modifications.

    Understanding U-Values

U-value measures how effective an element is as an insulator. Lower numbers are better:

    • Building regulations minimum: 0.30 W/m²K
    • Good garden room: 0.20 W/m²K
    • Premium garden room: 0.15 W/m²K or better

    The LouMil Standard

    All our garden rooms feature:

    • 100mm PIR insulation in walls
    • 120mm insulation in roof and floor
    • Double or triple glazed windows and doors
    • Thermal breaks throughout the structure

    Don't Forget the Floor!

Floor insulation is often overlooked but essential. A cold floor makes the whole room feel uncomfortable, regardless of air temperature.
