Everything To Consider Before You Build A Garden Gym
What size garden gym do you actually need?
Sizing is the single biggest decision, and most people underestimate it. A gym needs clear floor space around every piece of equipment, not just space for the equipment itself. A squat rack needs a metre of clearance behind it for walk-outs, a treadmill needs run-off space, and a bench press needs room for a spotter to stand.
As a rough guide, a 3m x 3m building suits bodyweight training, a bike or rower and a set of dumbbells. A 4m x 3m building comfortably takes a rack, bench and cardio machine. Anything with a full free-weight setup, cardio zone and stretching area is realistically 5m x 3.5m or larger.

Flooring: the part people get wrong
A standard garden room floor is not built to take repeated deadlift drops. We reinforce the joist structure under lifting areas and specify heavier-duty decking beneath the finished floor, so the structure absorbs impact rather than flexing.
On top of that, most clients fit rubber gym matting or heavy-duty rubber tiles. We can leave the floor finished in laminate ready for you to lay matting, or we can advise on thickness — 15mm is fine for general training, 30mm to 40mm is the sensible choice if you drop loaded barbells.
Heating, ventilation and condensation
Training generates a lot of moisture. Without airflow, that moisture condenses on cold surfaces and eventually causes problems. Insulation to the floor, walls and roof with a breathable membrane is one of the options available in our price tool, and we specify opening windows or trickle vents so warm damp air has somewhere to go.
For heating, a wall-mounted electric panel heater on a thermostat can be added as part of your electrical package and takes the chill off in minutes. Many gym clients also opt for an air conditioning unit, which cools in summer and heats efficiently in winter — worth it if you train hard year-round.
Running costs and long-term value
Where insulation and heating are selected, the heater rarely runs at full output. Most clients report running costs comparable to heating a single room in the house — and considerably less than a family gym membership over a year.
A well-built garden gym also holds its value. Unlike a temporary structure, a well-specified, permanently installed building is an asset that many buyers see as usable extra space.

The questions we get asked most often by clients planning a home gym.
Do I need planning permission for a garden gym?
In most cases no. Garden gyms usually fall under permitted development provided the building is single storey, under 2.5m high within 2m of a boundary, used incidentally to the house, and does not cover more than half the garden. Listed buildings, conservation areas and some new-build estates have extra restrictions, so we check your situation before we quote.
Can the floor take heavy weights and deadlifts?
Yes. We reinforce the joists and sub-floor beneath lifting areas as standard on gym builds. Combined with rubber matting of 30mm or thicker, the floor will comfortably handle loaded barbell work.
How much does a garden gym cost?
Garden gyms start from £9,000 inc. VAT for a compact build and rise depending on size, cladding and glazing. Can I have a shower or sauna in my garden gym?
Yes. We regularly build gyms with a partitioned shower room or a sauna cabin. Plumbing and drainage need planning at design stage, so mention it early and we will design the layout, waste runs and ventilation around it.
Will it be warm enough to train in winter?
Yes, if you select insulation and a thermostatic heater from our price tool. Most clients find the room warms up in ten to fifteen minutes and then holds temperature easily during a session.
How long does installation take?
Typical garden gym installations take 3-5 days on site depending on size and groundworks. Ground screw foundations mean no lengthy concrete curing, so we can move quickly once we start.
