Designing A Studio Around Your Craft
Light is the first specification decision
For painters, photographers and makers, the quality of daylight matters more than the quantity. North-facing glazing gives consistent, cool, shadow-free light throughout the day — the traditional artist's choice. South-facing glazing floods the room but changes hour to hour and needs shading.
We can specify additional windows, roof glazing or full-height glazed doors to suit the way you work, and position artificial lighting to complement rather than fight the daylight.
Sound treatment for music and podcast studios
There is a difference between sound insulation, which stops noise escaping, and acoustic treatment, which improves how the room sounds inside. Our insulated timber-framed construction with dense mineral wool already reduces sound transmission considerably compared with a standard garden building.
For music studios we can upgrade to higher-density insulation, resilient bars and thicker glazing units. Internal acoustic panelling is usually fitted after handover so it can be tuned to the room and your equipment.

Storage, ventilation and messy work
Pottery, resin, spray work and printmaking all create dust, fumes or moisture. Plan ventilation early — an opening window is the minimum, and extraction is worth considering for anything solvent based.
Built-in storage keeps the floor clear. We can design around shelving runs, plan chests and worktop heights so the building fits your workflow rather than the other way around.

Can you soundproof a garden music studio?
We can significantly reduce sound transmission with upgraded acoustic insulation, denser construction, acoustic glazing and properly sealed doors. Complete soundproofing is a specialist and much more expensive discipline, but the vast majority of clients find our acoustic upgrade more than sufficient for practice, recording and rehearsal.
What is the best window orientation for an art studio?
North-facing glazing gives the most consistent, glare-free daylight and is the traditional choice for painting and photography. We design glazing placement around your plot and how you work.
Can I run a business from my garden studio?
Many clients do. If clients visit regularly, or the use is no longer incidental to the house, planning rules can change — we advise on this at design stage and recommend confirming with your local planning authority for client-facing use.
Is there enough power for equipment and kilns?
Our standard electrical package covers lighting, heating and general sockets. Higher-demand equipment such as kilns needs a dedicated circuit and load assessment — tell us at quote stage and we will specify it correctly.
How long does a creative studio take to build?
Most studios are installed within 3-5 days on site once groundworks are complete, with lead times confirmed in writing when you place your order.
